Cooperation Canada welcomes Canada’s decision to take steps toward the recognition of a Palestinian state. This is an important and long-overdue move that aligns with international law and decades of multilateral consensus on the two-state solution as the only viable path to peace. Over 140 countries currently recognize Palestine as a state.

This decision reinforces the foundational principles of justice — where all peoples, including Palestinians, are entitled to dignity, sovereignty and self-determination.

Recognition alone, however, is not enough. We continue to call on Canada to immediately:

  • Advance concrete diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing conflict, violence and occupation;
  • Uphold international humanitarian law and demand accountability for violations;
  • Enable the safe and sustained delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, as well as the release of hostages and unlawfully detained prisoners;
  • Reject Israel’s immoral weaponization of aid as well as the ongoing intensification of military operations and displacements of the population;
  • Halt all arms exports to Israel.

Now is the time for principled leadership. We urge Canada to stay the course, engage constructively with all parties and center the voices of those starved under relentless bombardment and repeated forced displacement.

Earlier this year, Cooperation Canada called on the Government of Canada to take swift, strong and unequivocal action to confront the escalating crisis in Gaza.
