Advocate

Cooperation Canada’s advocacy efforts are closely related to the organization’s agenda for research and policy analysis as well as engagement with government. As part of Cooperation Canada’s efforts to foster a more collaborative, connected and inclusive enabling environment for the Canadian international cooperation sector and beyond, advocacy activities raise the collective voice of Cooperation Canada members to mobilize support for and take action on global development and humanitarian issues.

Cooperation Canada employs diverse strategies to influence decision-makers and advocate on the sector’s behalf. These include the development of sector-wide campaigns in partnership with members, support for member campaigns and those of global allies, petitions, open letters, parliamentary submissions and testimonies, engagement with parliamentarians (including through Cooperation Canada’s annual “Hill Day” during International Development Week), targeted efforts to engage senior officials across relevant Government of Canada departments and public engagement.

Direction and Control

‘Direction and control’ regulations require charities to exercise ‘full direction and control’ over their ‘own activities’.
