Strengthening Solidarity Across the Charity Sector Conference

Thank you for your interest in participating in this important conference, hosted by the Canadian Muslim Public Affairs Council (CMPAC) in collaboration with Cooperation Canada and Imagine Canada. The conference is held at the Human Rights Research and Education Centre at the University of Ottawa on Monday 24th of February 9am – 6pm.

This one-day event will bring together charity representatives, academics, and government stakeholders to address systemic challenges in the charity sector and to discuss actionable strategies for fostering greater collaboration and advocacy. Your participation and insights will be crucial as we work together toward positive change for all charities in Canada.

Conference Program:

  1. The Impact of Systemic Challenges in the CRA & Sector Advocacy:  An overview of how systemic racism and structural biases affect charities. An overview of advocacy by sub-communities within the charity sectors will be presented aiming to build sector-wide awareness.

  2. Understanding Systemic Bias: A detailed examination of biased policies, the CRA’s link analysis approach, and their impact on charity operations and reputation.

  3. CRA’s Approach to Auditing Religion & the Role of Misinformation: An exploration of how the CRA’s interpretation of advancing religion impacts diverse faith-based organizations and the harm caused by media misinformation campaigns.

  4. Bank De-Risking of Charities & Unintended Consequences: A critical discussion of financial challenges, including bank de-risking and anti-terrorism financing policies, with insights from real-world case studies.

  5. Moving Forward: Practical strategies and actionable steps to foster collaboration, build alliances, and advocate for systemic change to support the charitable sector as a whole.
