The Canadian Food Security Policy Group is a network of Canadian development and humanitarian organizations with expertise in global food systems, and food security in the Global South. Since 1996, we have been carrying out joint advocacy, research and policy dialogue to ensure that Canada’s international agricultural and development policies advance global food security in an inclusive, environmentally sustainable, and coherent way.

A new study commissioned by the Canadian Food Security Policy Group (FSPG) demonstrates how well-planned, inclusive agricultural development projects can not only improve food security and livelihoods, but also empower women and girls, and improve climate change resilience. The study also provides evidence that Canada’s support for investments in agriculture are declining—this at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has renewed focus on international vulnerabilities and the need to work towards resilient communities everywhere.

A critical look at the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition (NAFSN) in Senegal (May 2017)
The Food Security Policy Group urges Canada to focus on small-scale farming to achieve gender equality and empowerment of women. Canada’s support for the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition (NAFSN) in Senegal has demonstrated that this model of public-private partnership is not necessarily the most effective way to meet development goals. This is according to research conducted in Senegal and Canada by the Canadian Food Security Policy Group (FSPG).his brief includes case studies and costed examples of approaches that will enable Canada to achieve the goals of the Feminist International Assistance Policy and Agenda 2030.

Fertile Ground? Assessing CIDA’s investments in food and farming (July 2013)
The Food Security Policy Group (a coalition of CCIC and other development organizations) assessed CIDA’s work in food and agriculture since the Food Security Strategy began in 2009. The report is available in both languages. The Fertile Ground report is based on four background studies: country studies in Ethiopia and Honduras, a report on statistics and a report on international dimensions. All four are summarized in the synthesis paper.
